Poondi Madha Basilica
The Poondi Madha Basilica (Our Lady of Lourdes Church) is a stunning Catholic church that draws pilgrims from across Tamil Nadu. Built in a Gothic architectural style with tall spires and stained glass windows, the basilica sits in a valley surrounded by green hills. The annual feast in May attracts thousands of devotees. Even for non-pilgrims, the church's architecture and its serene setting make it a rewarding visit.
Coffee & Spice Plantations
The route from Kodaikanal to Poondi passes through some of the finest coffee and pepper plantations in the Palani Hills. Several estates offer guided tours where you can learn about coffee cultivation, pick fresh berries during harvest season (November–February), and purchase freshly roasted beans. The aroma of coffee hanging in the mountain air is an experience in itself.
Waterfalls Along the Way
The ghat road descending from Kodaikanal to Poondi features several seasonal waterfalls, particularly spectacular during and after the monsoon (August–November). While most are viewable from the road itself, some adventurous visitors trek to the base of smaller cascades for a refreshing natural shower.
