Poombarai

An Ancient Hillside Village Frozen in Time
Terraced garlic fields in Poombarai village with mountains in the background

Poombarai is one of the oldest and most picturesque villages in the Kodaikanal region. Perched on a steep mountainside at about 1,900 metres elevation, this tiny settlement is famous for its step-terraced garlic and vegetable farms that cascade down the hillside in stunning geometric patterns. It's a window into traditional Paliyar tribal life and a photographer's dream.

Kurinji Andavar Temple

The village is home to the ancient Kurinji Andavar Temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan. This temple is particularly famous because it sits amidst fields of kurinji flowers — the legendary bloom that flowers only once every 12 years, painting the entire hillside in a stunning purple-blue carpet. The last bloom was in 2018, and the next one is eagerly awaited in 2030.

Terraced Farming

Poombarai is known as the "garlic capital" of the Kodaikanal hills. The step-terraced farms, carved into the steep mountainside by generations of farmers, produce garlic, carrots, beans, and cabbage. Visiting during the growing season (October–February) reveals a patchwork of green and brown terraces that look spectacular against the valley backdrop.

The Viewpoint

Just above the village, a viewpoint offers a bird's-eye perspective of the entire Poombarai valley and the terraced hillsides. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Vaigai River plains. This viewpoint is less crowded than the more famous lookouts in Kodaikanal and offers equally stunning panoramas.

"Poombarai felt like stepping into a National Geographic photo. The terraces, the ancient temple, the silence of the mountain — it's the Kodaikanal most tourists never see." — A GG Holiday Resorts Guest
