Kodai Lake — officially known as Kodaikanal Lake — is the shining jewel of this hill station and the town's most beloved landmark. This man-made, star-shaped lake was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, and stretches approximately 60 acres in the heart of Kodaikanal at an altitude of 2,285 metres above sea level.
Travel Highlights
Things To Do at Kodai Lake
Boating
The lake offers pedal boats, row boats, and Kashmiri shikaras. Paddle across the calm, mirror-like waters while enjoying the backdrop of dense shola forests and eucalyptus groves. Boating is available from 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with prices starting at ₹150 per person.
Cycling Around the Lake
The 5 km path around the lake is one of the most scenic cycling routes in all of South India. Rental cycles are available right at the lakeside, from regular pedal bikes to mountain bikes. The route is mostly flat and family-friendly — a perfect morning activity.
Horse Riding
For a more leisurely experience, local horsemen offer rides along the lakeside promenade. Kids especially love this, and it makes for wonderful photos against the lake backdrop.
Sunset Walks
The golden hour at Kodai Lake is truly magical. As the sun dips behind the western hills, the lake surface transforms into liquid gold. The promenade is lined with flowering plants and benches — perfect for couples seeking a romantic evening stroll.
"Kodai Lake at dawn is a different world — the mist rolls across the water, birds begin their morning chorus, and you feel like you have the entire hill station to yourself." — A GG Holiday Resorts Guest
