Named after Lieutenant Coaker, who constructed this remarkable pathway in 1872, Coaker's Walk is a 1-kilometre promenade that runs along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodaikanal town. At an elevation of about 7,000 feet, this walkway offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in all of South India — stretching across the Periyar Tiger Reserve to the Madurai plains on clear days.

The Walk Experience
Starting near the Van Allen Hospital, the paved path gently curves along the mountain contour. On one side, the slope drops dramatically to the valley floor thousands of feet below. On the other, neatly maintained gardens and seating areas provide rest spots. The walk takes about 20–30 minutes at a leisurely pace, but most visitors spend well over an hour soaking in the views and atmosphere.
The Telescope House
Midway along the walk, a small telescope house lets you peer at distant towns and landmarks in the plains below. On crystal-clear days, you can allegedly spot the outskirts of Madurai city, over 120 km away. The telescope costs just ₹5 per view and is well worth the stop.
Clouds Walking Beneath You
One of the most magical experiences at Coaker's Walk is when clouds drift below the walkway, engulfing the valley while you stand above them in clear sunshine. This happens most frequently during the monsoon season (July–September) and early winter mornings (November–January). It's a surreal, almost dreamlike experience.
